چکیده

Background/introduction Combining focused ultrasound (FUS) with real time MRI guidance and monitoring enables a new non-invasive treatment of brain disorders. In this technique multisource ultrasound waves are focused at a single point raising the temperature gradually until ablation occurs. Lesions as small as 2-4 mm can be made, without impact on surrounding tissue or remote brain tissue. Our aim was to assess MR guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) as a new non-invasive surgical tool for treating essential and parkinsonian tremor by thalamotomy of the ventral-intermediate nucleus.

Noninvasive functional neurosurgery using transcranial MR imaging-guided focused ultrasound.

UNLABELLED Transcranial magnetic resonance imaging-guided focused ultrasound (tcMRgFUS) is a novel technique to supplement the spectrum of established neurosurgical interventions. In contrast to traditional ablative procedures, tcMRgFUS is noninvasive and entirely imaging-guided with continuous temperature measurements at and around the target in real time. It has no trajectory restrictions and...

MR-guided focused ultrasound thalamotomy for essential tremor: a proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND Essential tremor is the most common movement disorder and is often refractory to medical treatment. Surgical therapies, using lesioning and deep brain stimulation in the thalamus, have been used to treat essential tremor that is disabling and resistant to medication. Although often effective, these treatments have risks associated with an open neurosurgical procedure. MR-guided focus...

MR-guided focused ultrasound technique in functional neurosurgery: targeting accuracy

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to describe targeting accuracy in functional neurosurgery using incisionless transcranial magnetic resonance (MR)-guided focused ultrasound technology. METHODS MR examinations were performed before and 2 days after the ultrasound functional neurosurgical treatment to visualize the targets on T2-weighted images and determine their coordinates. Thirty co...

Acoustic characterization of a neonate skull using a clinical MR-guided high intensity focused ultrasound system for pediatric neurological disorder treatment planning

Background/introduction Transcranial MR-guided Focused Ultrasound (TcMRgFUS) treatments are now clinically performed on adult patients for brain tumor or essential tremor therapies. However, no application has been proposed for children despite their thinner skull being less of an acoustic barrier and the presence of a fontanelle on neonates, which could constitute a natural acoustic window for...
